Youâll work across the full stack, building the software that UK police custody suites depend on every day. Our team owns features end-to-end, from database migration to UI and our stack includes:
Weâre also genuinely investing in how AI changes the way we build software. We donât just use Copilot for autocomplete. Weâre building agentic workflows into our development process, using tools like Claude Code to automate routine work, accelerate code review, and let engineers focus on the problems that actually need human judgement. If youâre excited about shaping how a team works with AI, not just using it, this is the place.
If you were on the team last week, you might have:
Designed and shipped a new workflow for custody officers processing detainees, from GraphQL schema through to React components
Investigated a production issue using Datadog traces and logs, then pushed a fix the same day
Paired with a teammate to untangle a tricky state management problem in a booking form
Built an agentic workflow that reviews PRs, learns from human feedback, and posts weekly engineering highlights to Slack, all automatically
Managed a cross-team feature end-to-end â designed the architecture, broke work into parallel workstreams, and coordinated junior engineers to deliver on time
Reviewed a pull request, spotted a change that would unintentionally affect other parts of the app, and directed a safer approach in the comments
Prototyped a new idea at one of the hackathons we run twice a year, a chance to experiment with new tech, explore wild ideas, and ship something fun with no constraints
What Youâll Need
You write clean, maintainable code and care about the impact of your work. Weâre an AI-first team. AI tools are part of how we work every day â writing code, reviewing pull requests, investigating issues, and automating routine work. We expect you to be comfortable working alongside AI and keen to push whatâs possible with it.
You should have:
Professional software engineering experience, including ownership of complex systems and delivery of large-scale technical initiatives
Experience mentoring and supporting other engineers
Strong technical judgement and the ability to make architectural decisions
Experience leading projects across multiple teams or domains, influencing technical direction beyond your immediate area
A strategic mindset, with the ability to balance immediate delivery with long-term technical health
Experience with our stack: Java, JavaScript, TypeScript + React, and MySQL
Experience with AI-assisted development tools like Claude Code and how they can improve your workflow
A strong sense of ownership and accountability for both technical outcomes and team success
Confidence operating in ambiguous environments and helping teams navigate technical trade-offs
A collaborative mindset and strong communication skills
What We Offer
28 days holiday plus UK bank holidays
Private medical, dental, and vision insurance through AXA Health and BUPA, fully paid for you and your dependents
18 weeks paid parental leave (gender-neutral, for both primary and secondary caregivers) plus a ramp-back programme
Income protection (75% of salary) and death in service cover (4x salary), fully paid
Pension through Nest with 3% employer contribution
Gym reimbursement for you and your partner

Paid sabbatical of one month at your five-year anniversary
Biannual hackathons, learning budget, and a team that genuinely invests in your growth
What We Value
Humility. You know the best ideas win, no matter where they come from. You ask questions before making assumptions and youâre as happy being wrong as being right, because either way, the team gets to a better answer.
Inclusivity. You respect expertise in all its forms and actively seek out perspectives different from your own. You make space for others and assume good intent.
Excellence. You care about quality in your code, your reviews, and how you communicate. Youâre not satisfied with âit worksâ when it could be better, and you encourage the same standard in those around you.
Diligence. You take ownership, mind the details, and understand that the software we build is used in moments that genuinely matter. You donât cut corners when people are depending on the outcome.

Backend engineer designs and owns payment orchestration services at scale, from architecture through production monitoring and incident resolution.
An Introduction to Primer
Primer is the unified infrastructure for global payments. We give finance and payments teams the visibility and control to reduce complexity, improve performance, and capture more revenue - all from a single platform.
Backed by Sofina, Peak XV Partners, ICONIQ, Tencent, Accel, and Balderton, weâre building the payments layer the worldâs best companies rely on.

Which team will you be joining?
A Primer payment is worth so much more than a regular payment.
In the Orchestration team we build the engine that powers intelligent, seamless, and reliable payments â across any provider, method, or market. We own the full orchestration layer: routing decisions, fallback logic, and the smart infrastructure that makes every payment perform at its best.
This team covers everything from checkout and payment processing through to tokenization, authentication, fallback logic, developer tooling, and workflows.
As a Backend Engineer L3 you will work within a small, high-calibre team of engineers who own their work end to end. Youâll report into the Engineering Manager for Orchestration and contribute to systems that handle real payment volume at scale.
What will you be doing?
Take full ownership of backend features from scoping through to production, keeping the team informed on progress, risks, and blockers without being chased.
Design and deliver backend services that handle real payment volume, with a strong focus on reliability, performance, and correctness at scale.
Contribute to architecture discussions, bring proposals to the engineering council, and advocate for clear service contracts and simple, maintainable system design.
Monitor the production impact of your own work, identify issues early, and drive incidents to resolution when they arise.
Write code that your peers consider high quality: production-ready, well-considered on error paths, and built with the next engineer in mind.
Actively contribute to Primerâs engineering standards, raise concerns when you see gaps, and help the team hold a consistent bar.
Collaborate with engineers across the Orchestration team on scoping sessions, code reviews, and technical decisions that shape how the system evolves.
What weâre looking for
Solid backend engineering experience, with the ability to take ambiguous requirements and deliver working, production-ready software with minimal direction.
Strong grasp of distributed systems fundamentals: you understand why things fail in production and you build accordingly.
Comfortable working with REST APIs and the patterns that make services reliable, observable, and easy to reason about.
Experience owning work end to end â not just writing code but thinking about monitoring, rollout, and what happens after deployment.
The confidence to contribute to architecture discussions, ask the right questions, and push back when a design decision doesnât make sense.
Experience in a payments, fintech, or infrastructure context is a plus, though depth of engineering matters more than the specific industry.
You may not like it here
Primer is remote-first. There is no office to fall back on when you want context, direction, or a sense of how things are going. You need to be good at operating without those signals.
We do not over-engineer our processes. If something is unclear, youâre expected to resolve that ambiguity yourself rather than wait for someone to remove it.
The Orchestration codebase is not simple. You will inherit technical complexity and will be expected to deal with it thoughtfully, not just work around it.
You enjoy working in an office-setting, we are remote-first and always will be!
You are not comfortable with shifting context and navigating ambiguity
An initial intro call with a Talent Partner
An interview with the Hiring Manager
Challenge Stage - Contextualised to the role
A final, values-alignment interview
Weâre building a culture where people can come and do their best work and enjoy it. We want our people to be proud of the impact that they have at Primer, and of the work that they are doing. You will be working with a team of people who are mission-driven, smart, and reflective, and who are invested in building exceptional products and delivering success for our merchants (and we also know how to have fun along the way).
We work remotely. We believe that building a successful, profitable company goes beyond proximity. We invest in our relationships with each other through great remote working practices and thoughtfully designed face-to-face time together. Our heads-together time comes in the form of workations, our annual company retreat, and co-working space access worldwide.
Finally, letâs go ahead and say it. The work that we do is challenging. Scaleups are a challenge, building category defining products is a challenge. You should be prepared for a challenge at Primer. But, thereâs a big difference between a challenge and a struggle. The key difference is that the right challenge comes with the right support structures, an acceptance that not everything always goes to plan, a collaborative environment, and a great team around you. Itâs never a challenge that you will face alone.
đ We are fully remote and globally distributed; and have been since day one
đ° Competitive share options
đŽ Uncapped holiday, with 25 days minimum to be taken
đŁïž Co-working space access
đ Workations & Company Retreat
đ» The best equipment for your role
đ ÂŁ500 towards your home office setup
đ Generous learning budget
đ„ Private Medical Insurance
đ A broad set of additional perks and benefits ( depending on location)
At Primer, weâre dedicated to building a diverse, inclusive, and authentic workplace. If youâre excited about this role but your past experience doesnât align perfectly with every qualification in the job description, we encourage you to apply.
You may be the right candidate for this or other roles. Primer is committed to the equal treatment of all current and prospective employees, regardless of background or beliefs.
Primer adopts a zero-tolerance approach to discrimination. We are committed to providing equal opportunities to all current and prospective employees regardless of age, disability, sex, sexual orientation, pregnancy and maternity, race or ethnicity, religion or belief, gender identity, or marriage and civil partnership.
